Color

I still have one more layer of color to do,
but here is my progress so far.

I ended up ditching the old masters technique
due to the fact that I didn't have any medium to mix with
the paint and the time to do 100 layers. So, I reverted back to
my old ways. I did enjoy the "dead Layer" because I didn't have to
think about the shadows and highlights. I think I'll continue to use
the "dead layer" from now on. I'm going to try and finish this painting
by tomorrow night, which means the giveaway will be up soon.

Blasphemy Squad

As many of you know, or don't know.
José was in a punk band called Blasphemy Squad.
His cousin Carlos posted this video and I couldn't resist the urge
to share it. I had many wild and crazy adventures with
Blasphemy Squad, It's nice to have a little blast from the past every
once and a while :) This video was shot at the Knitting Factory
in Hollywood around 2006. I'm the girl with the camera
running around and blinding everyone with
those annoying flashes, José is the Guitarist (left).

The dead layer

I've only taken one oil painting class in my life.
I know some of the basics, like materials you need,
how to prep a board for painting, etc.
For the past two years (since I started painting with oil)
I've had to just learn by experience. I took what I knew about
other paints (watercolor and acrylic) and applied it to oil.
For the first time ever, I'm experimenting with a technique used by
the old masters. I'm not sticking true to the complete process just yet,
But so far I really like the idea of blocking in all of the shadows
and highlights first with burnt umber and then adding color on top
of the underpainting. Technically, this layer is not called the "dead layer"
but I like the way it sounds, so I'm calling it the dead layer.
Whateva, whateva, I'll do what I want.

Sketches of August

This month has been one of the tougher ones.
This is the first time I've created a somewhat elaborate interior,
so it took a little longer to put together. Below are some concept sketches
and the final (traced) drawing I'm going to transfer onto my board.
